How the DaiWalk 3D Configurator Works: Customising Your Cane Before You Order

The DaiWalk 3D configurator is one of the few tools in the walking aid category that allows complete visual customisation before purchase. This article explains how the configurator works, what decisions it helps with, and what it does not replace -- because the configurator shows you what you are ordering, but correct cane height and clinical appropriateness still require separate assessment.

What the Configurator Covers

The DaiWalk Original 1.0 has 84 possible configurations across four variables. The configurator allows you to set each:

  1. Wood species: Oak (warm golden-brown, open grain) or Wenge (near-black with espresso streaks, tight grain). Both are visible in accurate 3D rendering with actual wood grain textures
  2. Handle finish: Natural (oil finish showing true wood colour) or one of seven Colour Editions (pigmented through the wood, grain visible under the colour)
  3. Shaft length: Select based on your height, using the cane length calculator integration within the configurator
  4. Tip type: Steady Tip (standard, dual-durometer rubber) or specific terrain variants if applicable

How the Rendering Works

The configurator renders the cane in real-time 3D as you change each option. The wood grain textures are photographic captures of actual DaiWalk materials -- not illustrated representations. The colour on the Colour Edition shows how the pigment interacts with the actual wood grain of each species, which varies: the same colour appears differently on oak grain versus wenge grain due to the different texture and base tone.

Rotation: the cane can be rotated 360 degrees to see the handle geometry, shaft, and tip from any angle. The Anatomic Grip geometry is visible in the configurator in accurate proportion.

What the Configurator Does Not Do

The configurator is a visualisation and ordering tool. It does not:

  • Assess clinical appropriateness -- that requires a physiotherapist or physician assessment
  • Measure your wrist height -- the cane length input uses the cane length calculator data you provide
  • Show the cane in your hand or at scale -- it renders the cane as an object, not a worn tool
  • Replace touch and feel -- the handle texture, wood grain feel, and material warmth are things you experience in person but cannot assess on-screen

The Decision Process

Recommended sequence for using the configurator:

  1. Measure your wrist-crease height (or use the calculator at cane length calculator)
  2. Choose wood species based on your clothing palette and appearance preference (oak is warmer and pairs with earth tones and neutrals; wenge is cooler and pairs with dark or monochrome palettes)
  3. Choose handle finish -- natural for maximum wood character; Colour Edition for a statement accent or a specific palette match
  4. Set shaft length to your calculated height
  5. Rotate and view from all angles
  6. Add the leather lanyard as an optional addition if wrist retention is relevant for your use

Returning Users: Matching a Previous Order

If you are ordering a replacement or second cane to match a previous order, the configurator allows you to recreate the exact specification. Each order confirmation includes the configuration code for easy replication. The wood species, finish, and length are selectable to an exact match.

Return Policy and Configuration Confidence

The configurator is designed to eliminate post-purchase uncertainty about appearance. If the cane arrives and the colour or wood grain differs significantly from the configured preview, DaiWalk offers an exchange. Note that natural wood exhibits inherent variation -- two canes in natural oak may have different grain intensity or figure. The configurator shows a representative example, not the exact piece that will be sent.
