What size rubber tip do I need for my walking cane?
The most important measurement is the outer diameter of your cane shaft — measured in millimetres or inches at the very bottom of the shaft. Most walking canes use one of four standard tip sizes:
- Small — 16 mm (⅝"): Lightweight folding canes, collapsible travel canes
- Medium — 19 mm (¾"): Standard aluminium walking canes — the most common size worldwide
- Large — 22 mm (⅞"): Traditional wooden canes, heavier-duty shafts
- Extra Large — 25 mm (1"): Bariatric canes, reinforced heavy-duty designs
How to measure your cane shaft for a rubber tip
Place a ruler or tape measure flat across the bottom end of your cane shaft. Measure the full outer width — not the hollow interior. This outer diameter is the number you need. If you are between sizes, always size up: a slightly snug tip is far safer than a loose one.
What happens if I use the wrong size rubber tip?
A tip that is too large will sit loose on the shaft, spin freely, and may fall off during use — creating a serious fall risk. A tip that is too small will not fit over the shaft at all. Using the correct size ensures the tip grips the shaft firmly and provides reliable traction with every step.
How to fit a rubber cane tip
For a standard fit, align the tip over the shaft end and press down firmly with even pressure. For a tighter, longer-lasting bond, use the hot water method: soak the new tip in boiling water for 30 seconds to expand the rubber, then press it onto the shaft. As it cools, the rubber contracts around the shaft — creating a secure, locked fit.
